PN Racing Tire Compounds Explained

When it comes to 1/28-scale racing, tires can have a bigger effect on your car than almost any other setup change.

A car with the perfect suspension setup can still be difficult to drive if the tires don't match the track. Conversely, finding the right tire combination can transform a nervous or low-grip car into something considerably faster and more consistent.

For racers running on RCP, PN Racing offers several different tire families. Four names you'll commonly encounter are KS, KS-M (KSM), KSK, and KSP.

Although they may look similar on a product page, they aren't simply different hardnesses of the same tire. The compound, tread design, width, profile and hardness all affect how the tire behaves.

Here's what you need to know.

First: Compound and Hardness Aren't the Same Thing

Before comparing the four families, it's important to separate compound from hardness.

The compound refers to the rubber formulation itself: KS, KS-M, KSK or KSP.

Hardness describes how soft or firm a particular version of that compound is.

As a general rule:

Lower number = softer tire
Higher number = harder tire

A softer tire will generally produce more mechanical grip, but that doesn't automatically make the softest tire the fastest choice. Too much front grip can make a car nervous or prone to traction rolling, while too much rear grip relative to the front can make the car reluctant to rotate.

The goal isn't maximum grip at every corner of the car. It's balance.


PN Racing KS Compound

KS is one of PN Racing's established competition compounds and remains an excellent baseline for RCP racing.

The defining characteristic of KS is its behavior over a run. PN Racing describes the compound as developing additional grip as the tire heats up, making it particularly well suited to longer running sessions.

In practical terms, a KS tire may not necessarily feel its best during the first few corners. As temperature builds in the rubber, however, grip comes in and the tire settles into its operating window.

That characteristic makes KS particularly attractive when consistency over an entire race matters more than maximum initial bite.

PN offers KS tires in numerous configurations, including slick, low-profile slick, radial and Type-F designs, with multiple widths and hardnesses available.

KS characteristics

  • Strong performance during longer runs

  • Race-proven RCP compound

  • Available in a wide range of profiles and hardnesses

  • Good baseline for competitive setups

Consider KS when:

You're racing longer mains, the track already has reasonable grip, or you want a tire that settles into its performance as the race progresses.


PN Racing KS-M / KSM Compound

KS-M approaches the problem differently.

Where KS develops grip as temperature builds, PN describes KS-M as a quick-warm-up compound that provides good grip from the beginning of the run.

That makes KSM especially useful when the track is cold or when you don't have much time to bring the tires up to temperature.

For qualifying or short races, that initial response can be valuable. Instead of waiting several laps for the car to come alive, KSM is intended to provide useful grip almost immediately.

PN specifically notes that KS-M is suitable for tracks in colder climates.

  • Works well from the beginning of a run

  • Particularly useful in cooler track conditions

  • Available in slick, low-profile, radial and other configurations

Consider KSM when:

The track or room is cold, you're struggling for grip during the opening laps, or immediate tire performance is more important than progressively building grip throughout a long run.

KS vs. KSM

This is the easiest PN compound comparison to make because PN specifically describes the difference:

KS: grip increases as the tire heats up and is suited to longer-duration running.

KSM: warms quickly and provides good grip from the beginning of the run, making it particularly useful in colder conditions.

Neither is universally better.

Think of them as two different ways of reaching the grip level your car needs.


PN Racing KSK Compound

KSK is another RCP-specific PN Racing tire family.

Unlike KS and KSM, which PN commonly categorizes using descriptions such as Super Soft, Soft, Medium and Firm, KSK tires are typically identified directly by their hardness — for example 30, 35, 40 and, in some configurations, 45 Shore.

PN's KSK lineup includes slick and radial designs along with standard and low-profile versions.

PN describes the KSK compound as providing better grip and long life, making it an appealing option for racers looking for a predictable RCP tire without sacrificing durability.

You'll also commonly recognize KSK tires by their orange packaging.

One useful feature of the KSK line is the straightforward Shore-based selection. Once you've established a KSK tire that works on your track, you can move softer or harder within the family to fine-tune the car.

Consider KSK when:

You want a durable RCP racing tire with clearly defined Shore options and an easy path for experimenting with different hardnesses.


PN Racing KSP Compound

KSP is one of the newer PN Racing RCP tire options and is easily distinguished by its Snakeskin tread pattern.

Rather than being another conventional slick or radial, KSP uses this distinctive surface pattern and is offered in Shore-rated versions.

Current KSP Snakeskin tires are available in multiple hardnesses, including 30, 35 and 40 Shore, with both 11mm and 14mm versions appearing in PN's current product lineup.

PN describes KSP as offering better grip and long life, similar to the positioning of KSK.

KSP tires are also easy to distinguish at the track because they're packaged in a blue bag, compared with the orange packaging used for KSK.

The important difference here is the tread construction. Because KSP uses PN's Snakeskin pattern, racers should treat it as another tuning option rather than assuming a 30 Shore KSP will behave exactly like a 30 Shore KSK.

Consider KSP when:

You want to experiment with PN's Snakeskin tread design or you're looking for another race-oriented RCP option beyond the traditional KS/KSM and KSK families.

There is an important distinction in that table: PN specifically publishes warm-up characteristics for KS and KSM. Comparable warm-up claims aren't clearly published for KSK and KSP, so we don't recommend choosing between those two based solely on assumptions about temperature.


Slick, Radial and Snakeskin Matter Too

Compound is only part of the equation.

Two tires made from the same compound can behave differently if their tread and construction are different.

A slick provides a continuous contact surface.

A radial introduces grooves into the tire and can change how the tire loads, flexes and responds.

The KSP Snakeskin design introduces another tread geometry altogether.

You'll also find standard and low-profile PN tires. PN's low-profile tires are approximately 1.6mm thick and produce roughly a 23.2mm overall diameter when mounted on a 20mm wheel. For stock-class racers, PN states that these tires can generally be broken in on RCP without requiring extensive truing. More advanced racers may still lightly true the surface.

That makes low-profile tires especially attractive to racers who don't own a tire truer.


Front and Rear Tires Don't Have to Match

This is where tire tuning gets interesting.

There's no requirement that the front and rear of your Mini-Z use the same compound or hardness unless your racing rules specifically require it.

In fact, mixing tires is one of the easiest ways to change the balance of the car.

If the car understeers, meaning it pushes toward the outside of the corner, you may need additional front grip or less rear bias.

If the car oversteers, rotates too aggressively or feels nervous, you may need to reduce front grip or increase rear stability.

Rather than changing five suspension settings at once, experienced racers will often make a tire change first.

At this scale, a small change in tire grip can produce a surprisingly large change in handling.


What About Tire Width?

PN offers several widths depending on the tire family, including common 8.5mm, 11mm and 14mm options.

Traditionally, narrow tires are commonly used at the front and wider tires at the rear of Mini-Z GT-style cars. However, modern 1/28 racing chassis and body combinations have created considerably more setup possibilities.

Don't choose width based only on the idea that "wider means more grip."

Width also changes tire support, sidewall behavior, steering response, rotating mass and the overall balance of the chassis.

Always make sure the wheel offset, body clearance and racing rules allow the tire/wheel combination you're considering.


Where Should a New Racer Start?

If you're new to Mini-Z tire tuning, don't buy every compound and hardness available.

Start with a known setup for your local track.

Track surface, temperature, layout, car weight, chassis, motor class and driving style can all change which tire works best. A combination that is extremely fast at one RCP track may be mediocre at another.

Once you have a usable baseline, change one thing at a time.

Try a different front hardness. Run the car. Then try a different rear hardness. Run it again. You'll learn far more from controlled changes than from replacing all four tires and guessing which change improved the car.


The Bottom Line

There's no single "best" PN Racing tire.

KS is the choice to look at when you want a proven compound that builds grip as it reaches temperature.

KSM is designed to come in quickly, making it particularly useful for immediate grip and colder track conditions.

KSK provides a Shore-rated RCP platform with a focus on grip and longevity, available across several slick and radial configurations.

KSP adds PN's distinctive Snakeskin tread to the mix, giving racers another Shore-rated RCP option to tune around.

Hardness, width, tread pattern, tire diameter, preparation, track temperature and the balance between the front and rear of the car all matter.

That's exactly why tires are one of the most powerful tuning tools in 1/28 racing.

The fastest setup isn't necessarily the one with the softest tires. It's the one with the right amount of grip in the right place.
